This is the third in our Heritage Schools autumn teacher training series exploring how you can enhance your curriculum using a range of Historic England and partner resources
Who lived and worked in our local area? This webinar will introduce teachers to historical directories and what details they can provide about the people, businesses and local organisations such as schools and churches in your local area over a century ago. It will also demonstrate how this information can be used to start a census investigation of your locality.
The free session is aimed at teachers of KS1-KS3 pupils.
The session, presented by Martin Phillips, from Historic England’s Heritage Schools Programme, will include:
• Introduction to how to find and download historical directories such as Kelly’s
• How directories are slightly different for villages, towns and large cities
• An overview of the kind of information contained in these directories and how they can inform our understanding of an area
• How the directories can provide a starting point for a census investigation to finding out more about the people who lived in our area
